Folkestone Triennial: Community Animation

Block 67, Tontine Street | September 2017

Young Animators at Folkestone Triennial

Block 67 is the Creative Foundation’s studio space at 67 Tontine Street. During The Folkestone Triennial 2017, Block 67 will host a programme of artist led workshops, talks and events that embrace exploration, play and creativity.

Young Animators Club were invited by Folkestone Triennial 2017 to use their educational workshop space, Block 67 to create an animated film inspired by the artworks on display around Folkestone.

Think, Design, Make, Animate

This collaborative Animation was created by Pupils at Ferndearle School, and children from the local community.

The children took inspiration from the Folkestone Triennial 2017 Artworks and Folestone's urban and rural landscape. We thought about Rigo 23's mural on the Glassworks building and how he thinks about his surrounds both in terms of time and space. The children considered what Folkestone may look like in the future and talked about how it has changed in recent history.

BIG Cutout Animation

At Young Animators we love this technique. It is a great collaborative animation method, nobody really knows what will happen next, communication is key and the results will always make you smile.

Kit:

We use a DSLR camera, a projector and a laptop running Dragon Frame animation software.

This is an ideal set-up for large projects such as this. The participants can see a live feed from the camera projected on an adjacent or opposite wall, the DSLR camera provides good quality images for every frame of animation and Dragon Frame allows us to edit close-ups of the film once it has been shot so that we can experience all those great little details.

Materials:

For this project, we used map pins to attached our paper cut-outs to a double layer of foam-board. Blutac or whitetac can be used instead but can loose it's stick after a number of moves. A large pin-board or display-board is a great substitute for the foam-board and corrugated cardboard is a great (and cheaper) alternative.
